Abstract
Iron pyrite (p-FeS2) is an earth abundant material, which may have important applications in energy conversion and storage. Despite decades of consumer market of iron pyrite (p-FeS2) cathode based non-rechargeable lithium batteries (nLBs), the rechargeable lithium ion batteries (rLIBs) hasn’t been successful. The poor cyclabiltiy is due to: 1) the poor conductivity of the discharging product of Li2S; 2) the irreversible chemical reactions between p-FeS2 and the electrolyte; 3) the loss of materials due to the formation of polysulfides; and 4) the loss of the electrical contact between p-FeS2 and the current collector due to the volume-fluctuation during the discharging/charging cycles. To mitigate these problems, we encapsulated the pre-synthesized p-FeS2 nanoparticles into a carbon matrix. The preliminary data show that the battery performance is significantly improved compared with the bare p-FeS2 nanoparticles.

Biography
Dr. Yongan Yang is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry and Geochemistry at Colorado School of Mines (CSM). He received his B.S. in chemistry from NanKai University (China) in 1994 and his PhD in Chemistry from the Institute of Photographic Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1999. Before joining CSM, he worked as postdoctoral fellow and research scientist at Free University, Berlin; Max-Planck-Institute for Solid State Research, Stuttgart, University of Florida, and University of California, Irvine. His research interests focus on harnessing semiconductor nanomaterials based on earth-abundant and nontoxic elements for energy sustainability, specifically, lithium ion batteries, photovoltaics, and photoelectrochemical hydrogen production. He has published 30+ peer-reviewed research papers, holds 5 patents, and co-authors one book chapter.
